the wildfires that have been raging across southern australia amid record-high temperatures sent the holmes family rushing to the safety of a nearby bay near their home in dunalley, east of hobart, the capital of the island state of tasmania. with little time to find shelter, they huddled beneath a wooden jetty, narrowly escaping a fire that burned their home and over 90 other nearby residences. tim holmes was able to capture the dramatic photos below of his family while waiting out the fire.
“the difficulty was there was so much smoke and embers and there was probably 8 to 12 inches of air above the water,” mr. holmes said. “so we were all just heads; water up to our chins just trying to breathe because it was just; the atmosphere was so incredibly toxic.” he added.
