The Doors ‘Break on Through’ to Mars
“People walking on the moon” sang Jim Morrison on the song “Ship of Fools” but did he ever imagine his voice being broadcast across the arid plains of Mars? That’s exactly what happened with the new Mars rover Curiosity. On Thursday August 16th it was announced one of the songs used to “wake up” the Mars rover was The Doors “Break on Through.”
The announcement of The Doors being played on Mars was also the day after it was announced that in Los Angeles it was “the day of The Doors” as noted by Doors drummer John Densmore to TMZ. Densmore also went on to say it was appropriate a Doors song was used because “The Doors are basically aliens…The Doors were always considered ‘different’… like from Mars… no bass player, no flower power.”
With NASA’s mission to spread Rock ‘n’ Roll throughout the universe, maybe if we find life on Mars in the future we’ll also find them rocking out to The Doors, and have the “young lion” posters of Morrison on the walls of their Martian habitats.
